Company Background

The pertinent background and relevant characteristics of this private law practice initially began with the late Horace John Knowlton, my father. He was engaged in the private practice of law in Salt Lake City, Utah for over 65 years. It was his spirit, guidance, and respect for law that influenced many to enter the bar.

Ben P. Knowlton, Esq. was established in 1980 as a general practice. After litigating cases in nearly all areas of substantive law, a specialization developed in the field of individual liberties. It has been wisely observed, that a society may judged by the way it handles its mischievious members. There are very few places so imbued with personal liberties, and frought with real dangers of loss, as the criminal law. One has only to imagine, what if it was me or mine? Would I want more or less "due process" than what I presently perceive the wretched and hated members of our society receiving now.

Upon careful scrutiny the legal system over the past several years (perhaps subsequent to Justice William O. Douglas) has began favoring the government and large businesses. The individual liberties appear to becoming eroded for the sake of police lethargy and judicial expediency. What is being lost is what made the United States a great nation. It is "our" Constitutional safeguards and the Bill of Rights. Attempting to enforce unenforceable laws requires that laws be broken in the pursuit of justice. (What a silly proposition) Criminal defense is not about getting "guilty people off" it is about assuring that accused persons receive the presumptions of innocence and due process that our Constitutions mandate. To aspire to protect those principals is a noble and worthy ambition. This law firm is about individual liberties and freedoms, the retention of which requires a vigilant eye and willingness to fight for what is right.
